After he left with a quick nod, I felt hollowed out. I went into my house, patted my cat on the head and thanked God for the automatic feeder. In my bedroom, I checked for the Glock under my bed and made sure that all the doors and windows were locked tight. I didn’t want to find myself in the same situation again and even if the organization was on the run from the Hellions, it certainly wasn’t dismantled.

Rage was still out there.

The night was spent tangled in my sheets, tossing and turning as I fought to tamp down the memory of Shade’s hands on my skin again. It was so much better than when we were young and didn’t know what we were doing...so much hotter and more urgent.

The next morning, I called work. I called the police. It was a day of meetings and questioning, though I said I’d gotten away on my own. I didn’t want to get the Hellions in trouble, but I couldn’t ignore my civic duty. Not when the information could help other kidnapped girls.

Two days later, I woke up, put on a red dress and heels and got ready to go back to work. New clients were coming in to tour the facility, which meant I had to dress up instead of wearing my usual slacks and t-shirt that were so comfortable under my lab coat.

After work, I walked to my car, feeling on edge. I checked every corner and jumped when I saw the man watching me. My hackles lowered when I saw Shade standing in the corner, silently watching me. A quiet protector. I nodded at him, but got in my car and drove home.

Throughout the night, I heard the rumble of motorcycle engines a few times, but I slept better. I knew I was being protected.

Three nights later, things changed.

There was a knock on the door. When I answered it, Shade was there.

“What are you doing here?”

“We need to talk,” he said, pushing past me. I raised my eyebrows, but followed him and sat next to him on my deep, cushy couch.

“What?”

“I didn’t call you.”

“I said that.”

“There were reasons, Delilah, but I didn’t know if I should tell you.”

“Why?”

“Because I wanted you back so fucking badly, but I didn’t want you in a situation like the one you were in last week. I didn’t want anyone to hurt you.”

“And?”

“And things are more dangerous now than ever before,” he said. “We’ve turned against a cartel, damn it. They sell women. Bringing you back in--it felt like signing your death warrant. But you need to know that I thought about it every day. I’ve thought about you every day.”

“Why?” My heart was melting, but I was scared.

“Because I’m in love with you, Dee. I always have been, since that first day in sixth grade when you piped up with the right answer in math class.”

“I love you, too,” I admitted. “I’m not sure if it matters, though.”

“Why?”

“Because you make choices for both of us, Shade.
